I have to report that further armed robberies have taken place in and around Deep Bay since my report of the
9th. instant.
over
On 21st. instant about 1 a.m. about 27 men
engtered the village of Ha Tsun, about 2 miles from the shore of Deep Bay, about 7 having rifles, and the rest with revolvers slung on their shoulders: then they entered and robbed the chief shop, belonging to one Tang Chak Hing, of $2,780 in silver coin and of jewellery of the value of about $900. They then returned to the shore, where it is thought that they had a light oyster boat in waiting. They are said to have spoken in Punti (Sai Lo)
Dialect.
Last night, the 22nd., about 10 men mostly
armed with revolvers, entered the village of Chau Tau, about 1 mile from the Sham Chun River, and robbed three houses, then
retired in the direction of Lo Ma Chau Ferry.
I beg to point to the general state of law- -lessness in the districts to the North of Deep Bay, and the Sham Chun River, and to the large number of arms which are readily available for any robbers who are strong or rich enough to obtain them. The village of Sha Tau in particular is well-known for its lawless character, and for its abundance of arms, and it seems that this and other villages are able to make themselves in- -dependent of the central authority. I would suggest that it is necessary to the peace of the border that a strong force of soldiers be sent into the district, that all arms be confiscated, and the pirates, who are responsible for such outrages, severely
punished.
22nd. May, 1912.
